Edith in Context:
Socio-Economic Conditions at the Turn of the Twentieth Century

This exhibit was funded in part by Virginia Humanities, the Wythe-Bland Foundation, and the Virginia Tourism Corporation. The purpose of the project was to design and create a series of exhibit panels that would provide background information and context for the various social, economic, and political issues and trends that shaped and formed the life and times of First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson. The exhibit covers a variety of topics, all in response to the majority of our visitors’ questions and interests.

The exhibit is also available here.

World War I:
From Wytheville to the White House and Abroad

While Edith Bolling Wilson was serving as First Lady, the United States entered World War I. During wartime, she promoted her husband’s vision for peace, set an example for homefront conservation movements, and supported our troops. In many ways, Edith Bolling Wilson became the mother of modern First Ladies as she focused more on politics and social issues rather than serving as a traditional White House hostess.

The exhibition “World War I: From Wytheville to the White House... and Abroad” focuses on the leadership and contributions of Wytheville native First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson during World War I and how her involvement in international and domestic affairs affected the homefront.

The exhibition “World War I: From Wytheville to the White House... and Abroad” is funded in part by a grant from Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Additional promotional support is provided by the Virginia Tourism Corporation, Virginia World War I Centennial Commemoration Commission, Bolling Wilson Hotel, and the Wytheville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Girl Scouts During 'The Great War'

Picture
The exhibition will explore the role Girl Scouts played one-hundred years ago during World War I and how their service supported the troops and homefront. The museum is presenting the exhibition in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Archives Group. For two years, the Committee has worked to recreate a vintage 1917 Norfolk Suit-style adult Girl Scout uniform for the museum. The suit will be on display alongside historic photographs of Girl Scouts performing wartime service activities, including needlework, gardening, and selling Liberty Bonds. Visitors will be able to learn about the specific requirements to obtain badges and service awards during wartime.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Archives Group.
