Her Voice - Edith Speaks

Her Voice - Edith Speaks

On January 8, 1949, First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson attended a ceremony at the Library of Congress where she donated nine thousand books, manuscripts, and memorabilia that belonged to her husband President Woodrow Wilson. Librarian of Congress, Dr. Luther Evans, welcomed attendees to the Woodrow Wilson Room and encouraged those in attendance to explore the vast collection that embodied the intellect and knowledge of President Wilson. Next, Dr. Francis Pendleton Gaines, President of Washington and Lee University, spoke about Wilson’s position in world history and the importance of this collection for future generations of scholars and citizens alike. Dr. Gaines concluded by thanking First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson for her generous contribution to the Library of Congress.

This is the only known audio recording of Edith Bolling Wilson. Though Mrs. Wilson sounds frail, she spoke with quiet strength and hopefulness that her gift would outlive her and contribute to her beloved husband’s legacy.

Below is the virtual presentation of Mrs. Wilson's voice.  Please enjoy the video!
